I think that he is afraid of losing his brothers and living alone.
Darry would be alone with sodapop and be taking his anger on sodapop.
Since Ponyboy and Soda are the only family that Darry has left, he was worried of losing one of his gang members, especially worried because it was his brother.
When Darry's parents died he still had Sodapop and Ponyboy, but if Ponyboy got hurt badly enough he might die. I think that if Ponyboy died then Darry wouldn't be able to handle another person dying.
Darry was crying when Pony came back so he probably would cry if Pony died. Heather
